Old Stithian Newsletter – June 2017

Message from the OSA Chair

Dear Alumni

With winter well set in and the rugby season now at an end, we look forward to an exciting second half of the year filled with great events and good times to be shared.

In this newsletter you will see the “Save the Dates”, also our Monthly Club Draw where I try really hard to give money away to an Alumnus.

Talking about giving away, our Lottery is well under way and tickets are selling across the board. With amazing prizes like a trip to next year’s Hong Kong 7’s or a wonderful trip to the Maldives or if you are a Saints’ parent, two years’ of schools fees paid for you. All of this for only R500 a ticket, with a limited number of tickets still available.

Some background history of the OSA Lottery, it is a way for us to raise funds to put back into the school, to assist with projects at the One and All and most importantly, to assist Alumni who may have fallen on hard times with their children at St Stithians. We have managed to assist a family recently and it fills us all with a sense of pride to be able to assist our community, but to do this, we need those who can assist to help make it happen. All the proceeds are channelled into the Old Stithian Trust and managed by the Trustees to ensure governance and dispersal follows strict protocols. If you would like more information, please let me know.

It is a great privilege for St Stithians to be hosting the Craven Week Tournament from the 17th- 22nd July, which promises to be an exciting week for all involved.

As many of you will see when you next visit the One & All Club, we are starting on our renovation projects. The first instalment is replacing the deck. A project which has been taken on to create more space and replace our current ageing deck. It has been a great experience working with Scott Sargent, an Old Stithian from 1995, who has very kindly given us a massive 50% discount on the hardwood products which we are using for the decking. A donation which was extremely generous and I would like to thank Scott and his team for putting their hands up and are willing to help out.

This is the first of a number of phases of renovations which we are doing to our building to make it even better than it already is. Once we have the final plans available, we will publish them for everyone to see.

Talking about getting better and Alumni being involved at the One & All Club, Gavin White (1994) will have his beer brewed, under Main Stream Brewery, on tap at the Higher Ground Restaurant from mid-July. It is always amazing to serve Alumni wines on the menu and now to have Alumni beer as well, is a great step for us.

If you want to get involved in one of these projects, please get in touch with me and let’s find out how we can have you involved.

Until I see you at the One & All Club.

Stay warm.

Reunion Weekends for 2018
In conjunction with OSA, the school is planning 3 Reunion Weekends (1 / term) in 2018. This will enable the OSA and the school to combine their efforts and streamline the reunion process. A webpage is planned to allow the planner from each year to select the activities their class would like to participate in. The dates for 2018 have been selected but are awaiting approval.

At the AGM, we welcomed a New Honorary Life Member:
Congratulations to Colin Smith (1970) on being voted in as Honorary Member of the OSA for his long standing association with the school and OSA in a number of areas – Member as well as Vice-Chair of Council, Chair of St Stithians College Trust, Chairman Boys’ Prep PTA, Boys’ College PTA, Old Stithian Trust Trustee, OSA Committee and OSA Accountant, to name a few. Thank you for your contribution to St Stithians College and the OSA, Colin, and we look forward to working with you for many more years!

FOUNDERS DAY – 3 June 2017
St Stithians hosted founders day on Saturday, 3rd June. We had guest speaker, Retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke speak to our congregation. He reminded us how important it is to keep paying tribute to our founders and the vision they had for the school. We all left the service with the words, “Hard work and honesty” on our mind. It was a lovely service and the combined choir really did outdo themselves this year.

Girls’ Alumni Netball Event:
The Girls’ College hosted an alumni event on Saturday, 3rd June which was a great success. We had 4 teams that played games as well as the husbands join their wives in supporting them. It was a great success and we are definitely going to look into having a netball and hockey alumni event annually.

Class of 1997 Reunion:
On the 9th and 10th June we hosted the Girls’ and Boys’ Class of ’97 reunion. We had a wonderful turn out with the boys attending the chapel service then followed on by a walkabout tour by David Knowles. The Girl’s attended the pupil assembly where they were serenaded by war cries and even earned their stripes. The group then reassembled in the evening for a reunion dinner hosted at the One and All Club.

Please have a look at our Facebook page for more pictures of this event

Upgrading the One and All Club:
We are in the process of finalising the plans to renovate the One and All Club, Higher Ground Restaurant. We are redoing the deck; there will also be an upstairs viewing deck to host more supporters during the sporting tournaments. We will be expanding the conference room to allow for more delegates to be seated; we are hoping to accommodate about 250-300 people especially for reunions that would like to cater for their families to join them as well as potential weddings. A pizza oven and kiddies area will be built to cater for families with younger children.

Crusaders News

All teams have played around about two or three games so far, with the Crusaders ladies side beating Bedfordview on 31st May. The game was played on the Wayne Joubert field just below the Higher Ground Restaurant. The ladies played an outstanding game of football and we won 6v1. With this win we moved up to second on the log. Currently there are 221 registered members for the 2017 season, with an improvement from 2016.

The boys are thoroughly enjoying the clinic which comes to an end on the 22nd June. With more advertising and word of mouth, hopefully the numbers will improve in 2018.
All parents and the boys are invited to watch the game between the Springboks and France on the 24 June, this game will be shown at the Higher Ground Restaurant at St Stithians, with so far 37 people attending.

Crusaders elite swimmers recently went down to Durban and swam against the best in the country. The swimmers were there as part of the Central Gauteng aquatics team. A number of personal bests were swum.

All our teams are doing exceptionally well, with our ladies first team winning their last game
31-0. The juniors performed in a youth tournament last weekend and all the teams played well and the players enjoyed it.

One of our junior divers took a gold and silver medal in the Amsterdam cup. Wonderful news that Crusaders are performing so well on the international stage. Congratulations to all the girls that took part.

“Born to Run” runners compete in all the top races during the year, including the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon. Club runs are held every Wednesday evening at St Stithians, at the Higher Ground Restaurant from 17:30 from April to end August. There are currently 300 registered members.
