Neville “Ritchie” Richardson (1961) passed away on 1 May 2016, after a five year battle with mesothelioma (asbestos cancer).  After matriculating from St Stithians at the end of 1961, Neville became both a Methodist minister and an academic. For many years Neville was a professor of religious studies and theology at the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. When he turned 60, he had to retire from that position, so he began commuting to and from Pretoria while working for the Methodist Church, helping to establish a new theological college. However, Neville soon reached the Methodist church’s mandatory retirement age of 65, and at that stage he and his wife, Carleen, moved to Britain, where he worked as a Methodist minister in Yorkshire. Two of Neville and Carleen’s four children live in the UK, as do the majority of their grandchildren, which was an important factor in their decision to move to Britain – and so, as events transpired, Neville spent the last few years of his life in the country where he’d spent the first few years of his life.  Neville had a sharp intellect, a keen sense of fairness and justice, a great sense of humour, and a love of sport – all qualities that were present when he was a pupil at St Stithians. What we didn’t see at school, of course, was Neville’s profound love for Carleen and their four children, Nicky, Kate, Peter & Chris and grandchildren.
